On a Florida Eco Trek Tour, you’ll experience a variety of subtropical ecosystems, magnificent wildlife and beautiful flora. And you’ll enjoy a fun, physical challenge while doing it. Every Tour Option we offer includes separate “legs” of biking, kayaking and hiking. Even a team paddling leg in a large Indian Replica War Canoe is enjoyed. Everything (including bikes and kayaks) is provided.
All Tours require reservation slots and take place in 2 different Natural Areas. They are true “Loops” with no re-tracking over trails and water already experienced. Some are very easy and enjoyable, and some are just as beautiful, but more challenging for the really fit marathon adventurists.
Our more local and “light” tour challenges (called Bird Island Reaches) happen near and inside Melbourne’s Crane Creek Sanctuary. This beautiful Preserve and surrounding areas, allow 3 different 5 to 6 mile tours (over land and water). The destination for each is the Indian River Lagoon and amazing Bird Island. Options include an easy 2 1/2 hr. tour, a fun 3 1/2 hr. tour and an interesting and more challenging 4 1/2 hr. tour. These tours are also called I, II, and III respectively. They are enjoyed in the mid or late afternoon as the warm days cool down. This is also a better time because a lot of the beautiful shorebirds come in and prepare to roost on Bird Island later in the day as the tour members approach in the War Canoe. The park and the group’s cars are waiting beyond the Island a little ways to end an inspiring day on the water and land of Melbourne’s “Wild Paradise”.
The real “trek” challenges (a pair called St. Johns Wilderness Marathon Tours) happen in the huge upper river basin and conservation property of the State of Florida. The two tour options (covering 15 and 20 miles) include our 6 hr. Indian Field Reach and the 8 hr. Bald Cypress Reach. Participants in these need to be healthy, fit and not overweight. Again the bikes, kayaks and our giant canoe are provided (along with lunches on a forest picnic table for these longer tours). One huge difference in our kayak setups is the option to use unique umbrella setups. They enable our clients to beat the heat over water and in the hot sun, on these longer outings. Of course the umbrellas are also good for paddling in any unexpected rainfalls. Another nice feature Florida Eco Trek Tours have with their kayaking/paddling “legs”: always going with the stream currents.
TOUR LAUNCH SPOTS Our three Bird Island Reaches depart (after noon) at 2210 Front St. Park in Melbourne, Fl. 32901. Enter by way of Melbourne Av. going east, dead-ending into the free Parking Lot. This Park is minutes from Cocoa Bch. and an easy hour & 1/2 from Orlando’s airport and attractions. Our two St Johns Wilderness Marathon Tours depart (always in the early morning) at the end of Sweetwater Dr., Melbourne, Fl. 32904, with free parking. This Marshland Area is an easy hour from Orlando’s Sites and 45 minutes from Port Canaveral and Cocoa Bch.
TOUR GROUP SIZES Our Guides can take out (by reservation) 3 to 6 people at a time. “Stray” singles or doubles can sometimes be joined up with groups having room.
TOUR EXPECTATIONS Florida Eco Treks are not for the substantially overweight or faint at heart. Although our enjoyable tours aren’t overbearing, trekkers with good physical health and average body weight or less, tend to experience our outings with the most smiles. Again, the Bird Island Reaches are less physically demanding than the Wilderness Marathon Tours. Also, a lot of the time spent on the Bird Island Reaches is in the shade of large trees (over land and water) avoiding the hot summer sun.
Huge numbers of Birds and Fish will be seen on the Bird Island Reaches (with Manatees being seen during most of the year). More Alligators will be seen on the Wilderness Marathon Tours.
